악행자는 이 세상에서 슬퍼하고, 뒤 세상에서 슬퍼한다. 그는 두 세상에서 슬퍼한다.
그는 자신의 더러운 행위들을 돌아보고 비탄하고 괴로워한다.
The evil-doer grieves here and hereafter; he grieves in both the worlds. He laments and is afflicted, recollecting his own impure deeds.

선행자는 이 세상에서 기뻐하고, 뒤 세상에서 기뻐한다. 그는 두 세상에서 기뻐한다.
그는 자신의 깨끗한 행위들을 돌아보고 기뻐하고 즐거워한다.
The doer of good rejoices here and hereafter; he rejoices in both the worlds. He rejoices and exults, recollecting his own pure deeds.

악행자는 이 세상에서 괴로워하고, 뒤 세상에서 괴로워한다. 그는 두 세상에서 괴로워한다. “나는 악을 지었구나” 하는 생각이 그를 괴롭힌다.
그는 악도(지옥, 아귀, 축생)에 가서는 더 많이 괴로움을 받는다.
The evil-doer suffers here and hereafter; he suffers in both the worlds. The thought, "Evil have I done," torments him, and he suffers even more when gone to realms of woe.

선행자는 이 세상에서 기뻐하고, 뒤 세상에서 기뻐한다. 그는 두 세상에서 기뻐한다.
“나는 복을 지었구나” 하는 생각이 그를 기쁘게 한다.
그리고 그는 선도(인간, 천상)에 가서는 더 많은 기쁨을 받는다.
The doer of good delights here and hereafter; he delights in both the worlds. The thought, "Good have I done," delights him, and he delights even more when gone to realms of bliss.

경을 많이 외우고 있더라도, 그 따라 행하지 아니하면, 그런 정신없는 사람은 다른 사람의 소들을 세기만 하는 목자와 같다. 그는 거룩한 생활의 복을 얻지 못한다.
Much though he recites the sacred texts, but acts not accordingly, that heedless man is like a cowherd who only counts the cows of others — he does not partake of the blessings of the holy life.

경을 적게 외우고 있더라도, 그 <가르침>을 실천으로 옮긴다면, 그는 탐욕과 성냄과 어리석음을 버리고, 참다운 지혜와 해탈의 마음을 얻어 이 세계나 다른 세계에 있는 아무것에도 매달리지 아니한다. 그리하여 그는 참으로 거룩한 생활의 행복을 얻는다.
Little though he recites the sacred texts, but puts the Teaching into practice, forsaking lust, hatred, and delusion, with true wisdom and emancipated mind, clinging to nothing of this or any other world — he indeed partakes of the blessings of a holy life.
제2장 정신 차림
1
정신 차림은 죽음 없는 길이다. 정신 잃음은 죽음의 길이다.
정신 차린 이는 죽지 않는다. 정신 잃은 이는 이미 죽은 거와 같다.
Heedfulness is the path to the Deathless. aHeedlessness is the path to death. The heedful die not. The heedless are as if dead already. 3

정신 차림의 특성을 잘 이해하여, 슬기로운 이들은 그 가운데서
기뻐하고, <거룩한 이>들의 노니는 곳(법)을 즐거워한다.
Clearly understanding this excellence of heedfulness, the wise exult therein and enjoy the resort of the Noble Ones. 4

늘 선(禪)하며 굳건히 견디어 나가는 슬기로운 이들, 그들은
속박으로부터의 자유, <비교 없는 경지> 열반을 체득한다.
The wise ones, ever meditative and steadfastly persevering, alone experience Nibbana, the incomparable freedom from bondage.

의욕이 있고, 일념이고, 행동이 깨끗하며, 분별력 있고, 자제력 있으며,
의롭고, 정신 차려 있는 사람의 영광은 늘 커간다.
Ever grows the glory of him who is energetic, mindful and pure in conduct, discerning and self-controlled, righteous and heedful.

도력과 정신 차림과 수련과 자기억제로써 슬기로운 사람은
스스로를 위하여 홍수에도 휩쓸리지 않는 섬을 만들도록 하라.
By effort and heedfulness, discipline and self-mastery, let the wise one make for himself an island which no flood can overwhelm.

바보스럽고, 어리석은 사람은 정신없는 것에 빠진다.
그러나 슬기로운 사람은 정신 차림을 가장 귀한 보배처럼 간직한다.
The foolish and ignorant indulge in heedlessness, but the wise one keeps his heedfulness as his best treasure.

정신없는 것에 길을 내어 주지 말라. 감각적인 쾌락에 빠지지 말라.
정신을 차리고 선(禪)하는 이만이 크나 큰 행복을 얻는다.
Do not give way to heedlessness. Do not indulge in sensual pleasures. Only the heedful and meditative attain great happiness.

마치 산봉우리에 선 사람이 땅 위의 것들을 내려다보듯이, 슬기로운 사람이 정신 차림으로써 정신 없는 것을 버리고 높은 지혜의 망루 위에 올라서면, 이 고뇌 없는 성자는 고뇌하는 바보 같은 사람들을 꼭 그렇게 내려다본다.
Just as one upon the summit of a mountain beholds the groundlings, even so when the wise man casts away heedlessness by heedfulness and ascends the high tower of wisdom, this sorrowless sage beholds the sorrowing and foolish multitude.
